Vancouver police are recommending charges against a 66-year-old man after he allegedly tried stealing a police cruiser and assaulted a police dog on Monday morning.

At around 6 a.m., city staff working at the National Yards called 911 to tell police about a man who broke into a secure compound within the works yard. Police arrived and stopped the suspect from attempting to steal a police car. During the arrest, the man fought with officers and punched and kicked a Vancouver police dog, leaving it with a broken tooth.

“We are very fortunate that our officers and Canine unit were not seriously injured during the incident,” said Sgt. Aaron Roed. “This man was attempting to start the vehicle and flee before he was arrested.”

The suspect, of no fixed address, was taken to a local hospital for assessment and remains there. He was arrested one day prior for another incident in which he was uttering threats in Stanley Park, taken to jail, and released on an Undertaking to Appear with conditions.

Police are recommending multiple charges including assaulting a police officer and assaulting a police dog.
